Miriam Libicki’s pick

Boundless by Jillian Tamaki

Boundless by Jillian Tamaki

Boundless is a collection of short stories in literary graphic fiction form. Eisner award winning Jillian Tamaki explores postmodern ennui and the influence of social media, with loose, emotionally charged illustrations that take the stories far beyond glib thought pieces. Both the words and the ink drawings will haunt you for a long time after you close the book. Drawn in a variety of styles, it shows Tamaki’s range of skill as a illustrator, while the writing displays her skill as a storyteller. You may be challenged by the magical realism in some stories and the subject matter of others but it’s a rewarding journey.

I’m grateful to Friends for funding a great program like the Writer in Residence. It provides a local writer, like myself, to spend focused time writing, and to share our knowledge with the community and other emerging writers.

Miriam Libicki is a graphic novelist based in Vancouver, and the 2017 VPL Writer in Residence.
